Youth athletes compete for title of ‘fittest’ in Collingwood Combine

Over the next 30 days local athletes are testing their strength with the annual Active Life Collingwood Combine.
The free fitness competition includes four tests: a vertical jump, a single-leg pente jump (four jumps in a row on one foot for distance), an agility run between three cones, and a one-minute grind on an assault bike.
Designed to be well-rounded tests that don’t favour a certain sport, the combine was created by Active Life trainers Sarah Applegarth and Rob Buxton three years ago.
This year, Applegarth said the combine will run over the course of a month instead of a weekend to encourage participation from more sports teams and indviduals.
“It’s a super fun way for a team to come in and have a bit of fun,” said Applegarth, noting it takes about an hour to run a team through the four tests.
As of last week, there were already 330 participants registered, and Applegarth said she’d like to see it get to 450.
Thanks to sponsors, the combine is free and registration is done by teams. A basketball team, swim team, etc will all come together and each member of the team will run through the combine. Athletes are ranked in order for performance in each event. Like golf, the lowest overall score wins.
The competition is separated into four age groups: U14, U16, U18 and Open.
Everyone walks away with a free t-shirt.
Teams can register by email to [email protected] from now through May 10.
Prizes will be given to top athletes in each category.
